Phil groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter

http://www.awaketowoodstock.com/images/GroundhogDay.gif

Phil
, the world's most famous groundhog, saw his shadow reflected today, which means, according to the tradition of the town Punxsutawnew U.S., which in this cold winter still has six weeks more. Legend says that the February 2, groundhogs wake of his brief hibernation, and if they leaves outdoors and can see its shadow on the ground, winter will last at least six weeks.

Phil emerged from his burrow after sunrise and before 13,000 people attended this unique event. Many came dressed in black and gold to celebrate the victory of the football team Pittsburgh Steelers in the final of the night before. The annual ritual takes place in Gobble's Knob, a small hill in the town of Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania), a town of about 6100 people about 100 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Throughout the day there will be celebrations in the town to commemorate this tradition that dates back to 1887 and has its roots in the Celtic festival of Imbolc, which celebrated the fertility and became, with the arrival of Christianity to the British Isles in celebration of St. Brigid.

In the U.S., Phil is a celebrity and has its own supporters club, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, whose members are responsible for carrying out the ceremony for which they dress with top hat and tuxedo. A ceremony that became popular comedy Groundhog Day (1993) (Trapped in time) starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

According to the website of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, since Phil began to play its role as a "meteorologist" has seen its shadow on the floor 98 times, 15 times not seen, and there are records of nine years. So if their predictions do not fail, after the cold snap and snow affecting the northeast of the country, Americans must prepare for a few weeks of cold.

White Pointer Sharks Attack in Australia

http://www.nzine.co.nz/images/views/anthony_mckee_sharks.jpg
White pointer sharks are making their presence known around Australia. The white pointer shark, also known as the great white, has been blamed for three attacks on the heels of a fatal assault around Perth, so reports the latest issue of "Jaunted", a publication of The New Yorker.

In their article, "Australia Looking Out For White Pointer Sharks," "Jaunted" reports that the three attacks were non-fatal and were spread around the great Island of Australia including the tidal Lake Illawarra, New South Wales; also an attack occurred near Fringel Head which also is in New South Wales. Finally, the third white pointer shark attack occurring within a 48-hour period was reported in Binalong Bay in Tasmania.

As the article goes on to report, The Florida Museum of Natural History has tracked only 71 "un-provoked attacks" in 2007 worldwide and 32 of those happened in Florida.

In a related article, a 13-year-old girl was one of the three victims reported. She was attacked but because of her swimming skills was able to escape and was brought to shore by a friend. She was surfing. They are still searching for the shark.

Sharks swarm the Florida coast. I have linked to a video that shows Lemon Sharks hovering around the coast, over 200.

Of course the great white came to public attention from the popularity of the movie "Jaws" back in 1975. From that time people have been more aware of the existence of sharks even though there are so few shark attacks.

The reason that most sharks do attack is that they see a person that reminds them of natural prey. A good example would be a person on a surfboard who is paddling. They would look like a seal to a shark.

In the articles the comment is made that sharks are infiltrating Australia. I'm not sure that a few isolated attacks warrants the phrase "infiltration.

Sharks swim in less than three feet of water in Florida waters in and around swimmers without attacking.

This would lend credence to the concept that sharks, including white pointer sharks, rarely attack unless they think they are going to eat their normal prey.

Kathy Griffin's "Dicks" Joke From New Year's Eve (VIDEO)

CNN had Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin cohosting their live New Year's Eve show, and Kathy made Anderson blush on more than one occasion.

When she said she may host a reunion of "Bad Girls Club" during a reality show conversation, she started to catch some flack from Anderson and those off-camera for her job.

Her response?

"I don't go to your job and knock the dicks out of your mouth."

Amityville House Explodes, Ghosts Most Likely Not Involved

Most of you know the “Amityville” as half the title of the fairly recent, fairly decent Ryan Reynolds horror vehicle “The Amityville Horror.” Older people might know a more extensive version of the urban legend t hat involved a man killing his entire family, then proceeding to haunt the house for a month along with his victims.

This house has nothing to do with that.
It’s some other house in some other part of Amityville that exploded from a gas leak. The family living there was able to get out in time so the whole thing is quickly becoming a non-incident. I suppose it's possibly the ghosts got bored after 30 years and decided to blow up a house, ,but all indications point to non-spectral involvement. But the event has inspired a brief resurgence in the original Amityville story, and in the spirit of that, here are a few highlights of the alleged haunting:

•In the house windows flew up and down and doors were repeatedly ripped off their hinges in the house even though they were securely locked.

•Mrs. Lutz levitated a foot above her bed on several occasions and floated toward an open window. On one of the occasions, when her husband pulled her back, her 30-year-old face had been transformed into the face of a 90-year-old woman - "the hair wild, a shocking white, the face a mass of wrinkles and ugly lines and saliva dripping from the toothless mouth."

•In the dead of winter, hundreds of buzzing flies materialized in one of the upstairs rooms of the house.

•A 12-inch crucifix hung in a closet by Mrs. Lutz revolved until it was upside down and gave off a sour smell.

•The insides of the toilet bowls in two upstairs bathrooms turned absolutely black, "as though someone has painted (them) from the bottom to the edge just below the rim" even though Mrs. Lutz had recently scrubbed both bowls with Clorox.

•Lutz discovered a small secret room in the basement, a room that appeared in no blueprints of the house. It was painted solid red - and had the smell of blood. In one of the red walls, Lutz saw a vision of a face - a face that he would later find from newspaper photographs was that of Ronald DeFeo.

Read the full list of crazy shit here. Can any of this actually be confirmed? Well, they made a movie about it didn’t they?

CatGenie is unlike all cat litter boxes

It does more than any automatic litter boxes. The CatGenie acts like a cat box, works like a toilet, and cleans like a modern washing appliance.

1) CatGenie requires a one-time, simple do-it-yourself hook up to cold water and an electric outlet.
2) CatGenie uses litter-like Washable Granules to satisfy kitty’s need to dig and cover.
3) When kitty goes, the liquid drains away from the Granules so only the waste gets flushed.
4) When cleaning starts, the GenieHand scoops out the solid waste, which gets liquefied for safe, easy removal.

5) Fresh water fills the basin and the GenieHand scrubs and scours cat box and Granules.
6) The cat-safe SaniSolution deconta-minates the Granules and cat box of germs and odors.
7) Liquefied waste and sudsy water get flushed down toilet or drain and safely out of the home.
8) A hot-air blower completely dries the Granules and cat box for kitty’s comfort.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition to Permanently Dock At Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas December 20th

http://www.players.rpi.edu/current_season/76/Titanic%20Model.jpg

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. announced today that Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will open at Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas December 20, 2008. Newly designed for Luxor, this blockbuster exhibition brings to life the story of the ill-fated Ship through its authentic artifacts, dramatic room recreations and hands-on interactive experiences.

"With more than 22 million visitors to date, we consistently see how Titanic resonates and touches everyone," states Arnie Geller, Chairman and CEO of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. "Each of us can relate to someone on Titanic and the retelling of her story feeds our curiosity time and again. We are thrilled to be part of the transformation now taking place at Luxor Hotel and Casino and look forward to working with their exceptional staff and management as we present this blockbuster experience."

Felix Rappaport, president and COO of Luxor, said, "The addition of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is another new and exciting reason to come visit Luxor. Titanic's maiden voyage is a moment in time that has captivated us for decades, and Premier Exhibitions has done a tremendous job bringing authentic pieces of the story together to recreate this historic event."
As visitors move through expanded Exhibition galleries, they will experience this important historical event, disaster and passenger stories in chronological order: from the construction yards, to her maiden voyage, the fated sinking, to modern day recovery efforts. Each guest will become a passenger and feel the excitement of that April day as they step into authentically re-created first and third class cabins, stroll through the Promenade Deck and stop for a breathtaking glance at the social hub of Titanic -- the Grand Staircase. They will then feel the temperature drop, learn details of the sinking, touch an iceberg and understand the theories of this tragic tale.

Unique to the Exhibition at Luxor are more than 20 never before seen artifacts including gaming chips, passenger personal papers and decorative sections from Titanic's famed Grand Staircase. In addition, the Exhibition will showcase the largest piece of the Titanic ever recovered -- the 'Big Piece.' This 15-ton piece of the Titanic's starboard hull was raised 12,500 feet from the ocean floor and took more than 80 years, and two attempts, to surface.
Providing a striking visual on the Las Vegas Strip, the 30-story Luxor is an architectural wonder boasting one of the world's largest atriums. A multi-phase enhancement plan is revolutionizing the iconic resort and bringing new energy to the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. Luxor is collaborating with industry leaders, like Premier Exhibitions, to bring exciting new entertainment, restaurant and nightclub amenities to the property.

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a major provider of museum quality touring exhibitions throughout the world.

Chino Bandido

http://www.chinobandido.com/images/location-big.jpg

Chino Bandido Takee-Outee was founded in November 1990 by Frank and Eve Collins, husband and wife. The blend of Mexican and Asian cooking styles and flavors came about from Eve’s Chinese background and both Frank and Eve being native Arizonans. The original store was only 1000 square feet, seated 16, and was modeled after those “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants that Frank and Eve love. As soon as they realized that people wanted to stay in to eat, as opposed to taking it out, they expanded the restaurant year by year, until the restaurant grew to over 5,000 square feet, seating about 150.

In June 2005, we finally opened the Chandler location. It is tucked into the corner of San Marcos Square (behind the Walgreen’s) on the southeast corner of Dobson and Chandler Blvd. With 6,000 square feet and an outside patio, we have tried to create a spacious, comfortable dining area. Most of the parking is on the east side of the building, so be sure to drive around back for the closest entrance!

In the fall of 2005, New Times awarded Chino’s Best of Phoenix for “Local Eatery We Wish Were a Chain.” On January 29, 2007, AOL users voted Chino’s in First Place for Best of Phoenix “Cheap Eats” category.

Pink Dragon Millipede a Highlight of New Species Finds

http://www.ibtimes.com/data/articlethumbs/thumb_197141-pink.jpg

The "shocking pink" dragon millipede is one of the new Southeast asian species discovered in the Greater Mekong region during the past 10 years, according to a new report by the World Wildlife Fund.

http://www.prefixmag.com/site_media/uploads/images/posts/d/dragon-millipede.jpg

The millipede, which has the formal name Desmoxytes purpurosea, was described in 2007 from Lansak distric, Uthaithani Province, Thailand, WWF reported. Several millipedes were found among limestone rocks on the leaves of palms in the area.

The species was first discovered in 2007 university researchers in Thailand led by Dr. Somsak Panha.

http://a.abcnews.com/images/Technology/03_milipede_080619_ssh.jpg

The millipede's bright color alerts would-be predators of the toxic animal, scientists say, according to WWF. The millipede has glands which produce cyanide as a defensive mechanism. There are already twenty-three other dragon millipedes of the genus Desmoxytes in the Southeast Asia area from southeaster China, south through Myanmar, Thailand and Vietname, the report states.

Huntsman spider

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Huntsman_spider_white_bg03.jpg

Huntsman spider is a common name given to the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae). The larger specimens of these spiders are sometimes referred to as Wood Spiders, due to their common preference for inhabiting woody places (forest, mine shafts, woodpiles).

These eight-eyed spiders are found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, Florida, and Hawaii, and possibly in many other tropical and semi-tropical regions. They can be found as far north as England, Sweden and Wales .

Appearance

While frequently very large – in Laos, Heteropoda maxima males can attain a legspan of 250–300 mm (9.8–11.8 in) – Huntsman spiders are not deadly to humans. They do bite if provoked, but the victim will suffer only minor swelling and localized pain, and will recover in a day or two. Some larger types resemble tarantulas, and may be mistaken for them, as the Huntsman is related (which is why the term "Australian tarantula" has sometimes been used to describe them by the Natural History Museum in Sydney). Huntsmen can generally be identified by their legs, which, rather than being jointed vertically relative to the body, are twisted such that the legs extend forward in a crab-like fashion.

Many Huntsman spiders are dull shades of brown or grey. Their legs are covered with fairly prominent spines, but the rest of their bodies appear smooth. They are frequently found in sheds, garages and other infrequently-disturbed places. The Banded Huntsman (Holconia) is larger and grey to brown with striped bands on its legs. The Badge Huntsman (Neosparassus) is larger still, and brown and hairy. Its bite will inflict the worst injury, and local swelling and pain may cause nausea, headache, vomiting and heart palpitations. The tropical or Brown Huntsman (Heteropoda) is also large and hairy, with mottled brown, white and black markings. The eyesight of these spiders is not nearly as good as that of the Salticidae (jumping spiders). Nevertheless, their vision is quite sufficient to detect approaching humans or other large animals from some distance.

Habitat and distribution

Members of the Huntsman family of spiders are very common in Australia, but also in many tropical and semi-tropical parts of the world. They have been introduced to many parts of the world, including China, Japan and southern parts of the United States, such as Florida and Puerto Rico. A species of Huntsman can be found in Hawaii, where it is commonly known as a Cane Spider. In general they are likely to be found wherever ships may bring them as unintended passengers to areas that are not too cold for them to survive in the winter. In southern Africa they are commonly known as rain spiders because of their tendency to seek shelter before rain storms, often entering human habitations when doing so.[1][2]

As adults, Huntsman spiders do not build webs, but hunt and forage for food: their diet consists primarily of insects and other invertebrates. They live in the crevices of tree bark, but will frequently wander into homes and vehicles. They are able to travel extremely fast, and walk on walls and even on ceilings. They also tend to exhibit a "cling" reflex if picked up, making them difficult to shake off and much more likely to bite. The females are fierce defenders of their egg sacs and young. They will generally make a threat display if provoked, but if the warning is ignored they may attack and bite.

Toxicity and aggression

In general, Huntsman spiders are not regarded as dangerous, and can be considered beneficial because they feed on insects (Many Australians will relocate Huntsmen to the garden rather than kill them). There have been reports of members of the genus Neosparassus (formerly called Olios) giving bites that have caused prolonged pain, inflammation, headache, vomiting and irregular pulse rate; however, a scientific study into the bite of these spiders did not note any severe or unusual symptoms resulting from confirmed Neosparassus bites.[3] It is unclear under what circumstances these spiders bite people, but it is known that female members of this family will aggressively defend against perceived threats to their egg sacs and their young.

Sound production in mating rituals

Males of Heteropoda venatoria, one of the Huntsman spiders that seems to easily find its way around the world, have recently been found to deliberately make a substrate-borne sound when they detect a chemical (pheromone) left by a nearby female of their species. The males anchor themselves firmly to the surface onto which they have crawled and then use their legs to transmit vibrations from their bodies to the surface. Most of the sound emitted is produced by strong vibrations of the abdomen. The characteristic frequency of vibration and the pattern of bursts of sound identify them to females of their species, who will approach if they are interested in mating.[4]

Montauk Monster

The "Montauk Monster" is an unidentified creature which allegedly washed ashore dead on a beach near the Montauk, New York business district in July 2008.[1][2] The identity of the creature, and the veracity of stories surrounding it, has been the subject of unresolved controversy and speculation. Its discovery has been covered by national news channels such as CNN, and has generated popular discussion on the Internet.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8f/RhodeislandMonster.jpg

History

The story began with a July 23 article in a local newspaper, The Independent. Jenna Hewitt, 26, of Montauk, and three friends said they found the creature on July 12 at the Ditch Plains beach, two miles east of the district. The beach is a popular surfing spot at Rheinstein Estate Park owned by the Town of East Hampton. Hewitt was quoted:

We were looking for a place to sit when we saw some people looking at something...We didn't know what it was...We joked that maybe it was something from Plum Island. [3]

Her color photograph ran in black and white, under the headline "The Hound of Bonacville" (a take-off on the name Bonackers, which refers to the natives of East Hampton, and The Hound of the Baskervilles which is a book in the Sherlock Holmes series). The light-hearted article speculated that the creature might be a turtle or some mutant experiment from the Plum Island Animal Disease Center before noting that Larry Penny, the East Hampton Natural Resources Director, had concluded it was a raccoon with its upper jaw missing. The article concluded that "someone took it away... to be buried... we hope."[4] A local newspaper quoted an unidentified woman, who claimed that the animal was only the size of a cat, and had decomposed to a skeleton by the time of the press coverage. She would not identify its location for inspection.[5] Hewitt's father denies claims that his daughter is keeping the body's location a secret.[5]

Hewitt and her friends were interviewed on Plum-TV, a local cable television show.[6] Alanna Navitski, an employee of Evolutionary Media Group in Los Angeles, California, passed a photo of the creature to Anna Holmes at Jezebel, claiming that a friend's sister saw the monster in Montauk. Holmes then passed it along to fellow Gawker Media website Gawker.com which gave it wide attention on July 29 under the headline "Dead Monster Washes Ashore in Montauk".[7]

Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo first coined the name the "Montauk Monster" on July 29, 2008. [8] The moniker was disseminated globally on the Internet in the following days. Photographs were widely circulated via email and weblogs, and the national media picked up on it raising speculation about the creature. The potential urban legend stature of the Montauk Monster was noted by Snopes.[9]

Possible identifications

Speculation in published reports included theories that the Montauk Monster might have been a turtle without its shell—even though a turtle's shell cannot be removed without damaging the spine[10][11]—a dog, a raccoon,[12][13] or perhaps a science experiment from the nearby government animal testing facility, the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.[14] The creature's appearance was believed to have been altered through immersion in water for an extended period before coming to rest on the shore, making it difficult to identify.[12]

William Wise, director of Stony Brook University's Living Marine Resources Institute, interpreted the photo along with a colleague; they deemed the creature a fake, the result of "someone who got very creative with latex." Wise discounted the following possibilities:[15]

  • Raccoon. ("The legs appear to be too long in proportion to the body." Edit: The expert that stated this, William Wise mentioned above, said he assumed the leg length, but when he later checked more into this, he found he was mistaken as to leg length. Personal correspondence.)
  • Sea turtle. ("Sea turtles do not have teeth")
  • Rodent. ("Rodents have two huge, curved incisor teeth in front of their mouths.")
  • Dog or other canine such as a coyote. ("Prominent eye ridge and the feet" don't match.)
  • Sheep. (Sheep don't have sharp teeth).

On August 1st, Gawker[16] published pictures and X-ray images of a water rat, an Australian rodent with several similarities to the Montauk Monster, such as the "beak", tail, feet, and size. On the same day, Jeff Corwin appeared on Fox News and claimed that upon close inspection of the photograph, he feels sure the "monster" is merely a raccoon or dog that has decomposed slightly.[12] This was backed up by Darren Naish, a British paleontologist, who examined the images and agreed that, if real, the creature was a raccoon. Naish says that "claims that the limb proportions of the Montauk carcass are unlike those of raccoons are not correct", and on his blog he furnishes an illustration of an intact raccoon corpse drawn over the corpse in the photograph.[12]

http://www.skullsunlimited.com/graphics/sm-385-lg.jpg

On August 5, Fox News Channel's Morning Show repeated speculation that the beast is a decayed corpse of a capybara, even though capybaras do not have tails.[17] The next day, the same program reported that an unnamed man claimed that the animal's carcass had been stolen from his front yard.[18]

Little Green Street

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photos/21/26/212692_c2b838e4.jpg

Little Green Street
is an eighteenth century street in London, located off Highgate Road in Kentish Town.

History

The street is diminutive, with only eight houses on one side and two on the other. The houses were built in the 1780s, are Grade II listed, and remain one of the few intact Georgian streets in London. There are records of the small, bow-fronted shops selling ribbons and mousetraps, and previous inhabitants include manual workers such as carpenters.

One of the first official mentions of Little Green Street is in the court records of the Old Bailey for 10 July 1805, where Mary Lee, a female servant was fined and sent to the Clerkenwell House of Correction for "simple grand larceny" (theft).[1]

Almost a century later, in 1898 or 1899, Charles Booth, in his survey Life and Labour of the People in London, gave the following description of Little Green Street:

"Little Green St. (E. side of H. Road) with 8 old-fashioned cottages; 2 st. and 2 plus attics; round projecting windows; small panes of glass; quaint; been done up; decent. Pink. These on N. side. On the S. are 2 or 3 more modern but much worse houses; 2 and 3 st. light blue."

(The colours in this description refer to Booth's poverty classifications. Light blue was: "Poor. 18s. to 21s. a week for a moderate family". Pink was "Fairly comfortable. Good ordinary earnings.")

Cabin fever

http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/jtr0193l.jpg

Cabin fever is a slang term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, for an extended period. Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, forgetfulness, and excessive sleeping.[1]

The origin of the term is unknown, but was first recorded in 1918.[2] The term may originate from the United States during the time when settlers would be snowed into their log cabins in winter and would have to wait for the spring thaw in order to travel to town.[3] The phrase may also be associated with ocean-crossing sailing ships in which passengers had to endure weeks and months of slow travel while living in cabins below deck.[citation needed]

On an episode of Mythbusters, the hosts attempted to "bust" the myth of cabin fever, isolating themselves for a period of time in the Alaskan winter while being observed and taking cognitive and stress tests. The test results were unusable due to incorrect testing procedures; however, one host, Adam Savage, exhibited all four of the symptoms of cabin fever they were looking for, while the other, Jamie Hyneman, only exhibited one (excessive sleep). They deemed the myth "plausible".[1]

Many stories are based around this idea of a small group of people getting restless and irritable from being in a confined space. One of the most famous stories about cabin fever is Stephen King's The Shining which involves a family of three trapped in an isolated resort in the dead of winter. Cabin fever stories may also involve a person or group of people on a deserted island or on a long space voyage.

Capital of China: Peking or Beijing?

http://www.luisbeltran.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/luis-en-caligrafia-china.png

Prior to 1958, the Chinese government used the Wade-Giles system to transliterate Chinese characters into the Roman alphabet. After 1958 the government switched, and the rest of the world followed, to the pinyin system of transliteration so now we call the capital city Beijing (pinyin) instead of Peking (Wade-Giles).
