2009 Toyota Venza preview

http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bto/20081210/Venza_037_800_610x457.jpg

Toyota invited us out to preview its new for 2009 Venza. Billing the Venza as "car-optimized," Toyota downright refuses to call it a wagon or a crossover. Curiously, Toyota expects the Venza to be compared with the Ford Edge, Mazda CX-7, and Nissan Murano, all of which are crossovers. They say you're judged by the caliber of your enemies, so I guess that makes the Venza a crossover as well.

Whatever you call it, the Venza is an interesting vehicle. It rides almost like a Camry, but with carrying capabilities that are just shy of the Highlander. Sedan/wagon-like proportions and big 20-inch wheels help hide some of the visual mass, but--there's no getting around it--the Venza is a big vehicle. Don't believe me? Ask the entry model's 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine.

Outputting 182 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque, the four-cylinder engine feels underpowered for pulling the 5,000 pound Venza around town. The step-up 3.5-liter V-6's 268 ponies and 246 pound-feet of twist feel much better suited for motivational duties.

Inside, the Venza can be equipped with Toyota's sixth-generation DVD navigation system with voice command, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming from supported A2DP devices, satellite radio with XM NavTraffic, and a powerful 13-speaker JBL Synthesis audio system that sounds fantastic. The Venza features the requisite 10 cup holders and a clever piece of vehicle interior design that we hope to see more of in future vehicles: cable management.

The Venza's center console features three pockets for MP3 players or cell phones with pass-throughs for routing audio or charging cables to the 12V power or aux-input hidden deep in the console. It's a really neat way to keep the interior from looking like a wiry mess, while keeping the devices visible.

Sound Transit completes East Link draft environmental review

http://www.lightrailnow.org/images/sea-lrt-rend-kinkisharyo-car-96-ft_st.jpg

Sound Transit recently published the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the East Link light-rail line. The agency now will hold public hearings to discuss the DEIS' findings and solicit public comments until Feb. 25, 2009.

East Link calls for extending light-rail service from downtown Seattle to the city's east side across Interstate 90, with stations serving Mercer Island, south Bellevue, the Bel-Red corridor, and Redmond's Overlake area. The line will connect with the Link light-rail system between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport, which currently is under construction and scheduled to open in 2009.

The DEIS outlines 19 East Link route alternatives with up to 13 stations. The board is expected to identify a preferred alternative next spring; Sound Transit officials expect to complete the final EIS in 2010.

East Link is scheduled to open to downtown Bellevue, Wash., in 2020, with service to Overlake by 2021. The line is expected to serve up to 48,000 passengers daily.

2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara

http://www.sobrecoches.com/var/plain_site/storage/images/coches/suzuki/grand_vitara/novedad_edicion_especial/exterior/suzuki_grand_vitara/147637-1-esl-ES/suzuki_grand_vitara1.jpg

Grand, even in base trim

Suzuki’s Grand Vitara still looks much the same as it has since a 2006 redesign. While the company touts this year’s model as having been redesigned inside and out, the exterior of the GV is still very much the same.

It sports a larger grille for 2009, and a somewhat more intimidating bumper, but the company hasn’t gone all-out on the restyling the way we saw with the last change to the XL7, also a couple years back.

The major change to the vehicle, Suzuki’s second-biggest ute, is a new engine availability for the base models; and our Autonet test model was equipped with it- a 2.4L inline four cylinder.

Search for a used Suzuki Grand Vitara

The four-banger gives the GV 166 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque, and its displacement provides better mileage without a punishing trade off in power, making the 2.4 litre Vitara a relatively economical light duty ute. Incidentally, the Grand Vitara is also sold with a 3.2L V6, which ups the output to 230 ponies)

While the smaller engine didn’t feel inadequate in my time with it, there is the expected lag in acceleration when taking off from a full stop; though not enough of a delay to feel alarming.

The Grand-Vee boasts a four-mode, four wheel drive system, making it capable of going offroad when necessary; though I’ll stick my neck out and say that I imagine most of the smaller-engine models sold will be used in suburban settings.

The vehicle’s ability as an all-purpose hauler is framed by very good towing capability, which Suzuki asserts is best-in-class for a compact SUV: 1360 kg (3,000 lb.) when properly equipped.

And though not pretty enough to be called a cute-ute (the cute ute from Suzuki would be its delightful little SX4), the GV is comparable in size to vehicles like Toyota’s RAV4 or the Hyundai Tucson; leaving it fairly wieldy in city traffic and parking lots.

Inside, the cabin of my test vehicle was clad in a net-textured black cloth upholstery, with seating for up to five people. Seat comfort was good all around, and the rear seats offer good head and legroom. The interior is not unattractive, just somewhat plain; with a rather basic-but-functional instrument layout and easy to use controls.

The real-time mileage display on the central gauge cluster is not the most useful thing in the world, displaying second-by-second fuel consumption; but it can be set to show a static display of averaged fuel economy.

My favourite feature of the JX trim test vehicle was the keyless start and entry. I love an intelligent key that you never have to take out of your pocket to get in the car and drive, and it came as something of a surprise, considering the tester was a rather base level.

The ride is reasonable if not luxurious, with some road noise making its way into the cabin without being overly jarring. The Grand Vitara’s suspension (independent strut front, multilink rear) lets you feel what’s happening on the road, but absorbs the bumps and craters well, without shaking up front seat passengers.

Handling is average, and commensurate with most of its competition. As with any ute of its proportions, you can feel a little sway when cornering; and steering is acceptably responsive. ABS brakes provide good stopping power, and apply smoothly in normal situations.

My only complaint with it at this point is I’m not sure I like the wide-swinging rear door. Hinged on the right hand side, opening the rear gate takes up a fair amount of space, and is best accessed from the left side. Of course, if they made it hinged on the top the hard case for the spare tire would have to be done away with, so decide if you like that.

Ultimately, the Grand Vitara provided everything a smallish utility vehicle should. While my model was a near bottom-of-the-line JX model, including no options, yet still managed to bring a very good level of standard equipment and a ready work ethic.

In addition to the keyless start and ABS, the JX had cruise control, A/C, steering mounted audio controls, a hard case spare tire cover mounted on the rear, tinted glass, and perfectly acceptable base stereo system among its amenities.

The vehicle can be had (slightly) cheaper by opting for the manual-transmission JA trim or more expensively, if a buyer chooses a leather-appointed JXL model, but for our JX tryout, the MSRP stayed well under 30K.

Honda Leaves Formula One Racing

Honda announced on Friday that it would withdraw from Formula One, a startling pullout that has its origins in the dismal state of the auto industry and which could have serious repercussions on the high-profile racing circuit.

A glum Takeo Fukui, the chief executive officer of Honda, made the announcement at a news conference in Tokyo.

He called the company’s withdrawal from the series “a difficult decision” caused by the worldwide economic gloom and “the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry.”

“I offer my sincere apologies,” he said, “to everyone involved.”

The governing body for Formula One racing said in a statement Friday that the sport’s finances were in “an already critical situation.”

Honda has struggled badly this year, battered by weakening sales and a strengthening yen. November sales, for example, were off 32 percent from a year ago.

“Honda must protect its core business activities and secure the long term,” Mr. Fukui said. “A recovery is expected to take some time.”

While he cited economic reasons for departing from Formula One, the Honda team could have used the sporting equivalent of a bailout. Honda ended in ninth place out of the 10 teams that finished the season. A co-sponsored team, Super Aguri-Honda, withdrew after just four races this year, citing a lack of funding.

The Honda team’s drivers also fared poorly: Rubens Barrichello of Brazil finished 14th in the standings and Jenson Button of Britain was 18th.

With the Honda racing team now up for sale, one of the principal worries among frenzied Formula One bloggers around the world was the future of the Toyota team — and perhaps the future of the circuit itself.

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, has its own financial troubles this year, and its November sales were down 34 percent from last year.

But a Toyota spokesman was quoted this week as saying the company had no intention of putting its Formula One team up on blocks. The company said it would introduce its new racing car on Jan. 15 over the Internet instead of its usual glamorous unveiling.

Also, last week, LG Electronics announced a multiple-year technological partnership and marketing sponsorship program with the overall race series.

But car companies are cutting costs, laying off workers, closing factories and, in the United States, pleading for bailouts. Those woes clearly extend to racing sponsorships: Audi, the German car manufacturer, announced this week it would withdraw from the popular Le Mans sports car series in Europe.

Formula One bills itself as the world’s richest sport. Its race teams subsist on sponsorships, television rights money, advertising contracts and sales to the so-called “Paddock Club,” which caters to the wealthy during the season’s 17 to 19 annual races, each known as a Grand Prix. The sport features some of the world’s heftiest brands in some of the glossiest sectors — telecoms, liquor, computers, banking and automobiles.

For their sponsorships, the companies get global television exposure for their logos — even if those trademarks are flashing by at 220 miles an hour — along with big promotional dividends. The Formula One race in Brazil last year was the world’s second-most-watched sports event with 78 million viewers, trailing only the 2007 Super Bowl with an audience of 97 million.

The 11 teams on the Formula One circuit spent a reported $1.6 billion during the 2008 season, which ended on Nov. 2. Max Mosley, the president of the International Automobile Federation, which governs Formula One and other racing series, has called that spending figure “unsustainable.”

A statement Friday from the federation reiterated that view, repeating the word “unsustainable” and adding that “the global economic downturn has only exacerbated an already critical situation.”

Even successful, winning teams on the circuit lose money, and the budget for the Honda operation was said to be close to $300 million this season. The team employed more than 700 people at its headquarters in Brackley, England.

The Honda withdrawal came as a surprise to the team, Formula One sources said.

Until recent years, Formula One was a Eurocentric sport. And while television revenues from Europe still dominate, half the races are now outside Europe, including events in Australia, Brazil, Bahrain, Malaysia, China, Turkey and Singapore. A race in India is planned for the 2011 season.

Honda entered the series racing in the early 1960s, not long after it first started making cars. The team’s first Formula One race was the 1964 German Grand Prix — in the backyard of BMW and Mercedes— and its first victory came the following year in Mexico.

The Honda driver Jo Schlesser was killed at the French Grand Prix in 1968, leading the team to shut down its team and withdraw from Grand Prix racing at the end of that year. It returned to Formula One in 1983 but as an engine supplier, notably to the highly successful McLaren and Williams teams.

By the time it left again in 1992 it had won 69 more races and several world championships, dominating the series. It returned again in 2000 as an engine provider to the British American Racing team, and it bought the team outright in 2006, when it began to race under the Honda name again.

At the time, a share of Honda stock on the Tokyo exchange was priced at 3,980 yen. The stock closed Friday at 1,653 yen, down 8.3 percent on the day.

L.A. Auto Show pushes efficiency

As government hearings on the auto industry's fate take a Thanksgiving break, car fans in California will visit the Los Angeles Auto Show to see the technology, design and performance that have made cars an integral part of American culture.

The L.A. show focuses on design and efficiency, and the 2008 auto show there provides highlights and lowlights of both. Ford and Nissan have particularly strong new vehicles at the show.

http://www.autospies.com/images/users/naami/2010%20Ford%20Fusion.jpg

Hit: 2010 Ford Fusion and hybrid

The hybrid deservedly gets praise for its promise to top 38 m.p.g. in EPA city and highway fuel economy tests -- 4 or 5 m.p.g. better than the Camry hybrid. The hybrid Fusion and Mercury Milan can also reach 47 m.p.h. in electric-only mode -- about 20 m.p.h. faster than any other hybrid.

Don't overlook other models of the Fusion, which get more power and improved fuel economy from a new powertrain lineup.

All 2010 Fusions also benefit from a handsome new look for the hood, grille and lights. New materials and instruments boost the interior's appeal.

Hit: 2010 Ford Mustang

The Mustang is a tough act to follow, but the totally redone exterior -- every body panel but the roof is new -- and vastly improved interior should keep fans happy and win new buyers. In the past, Ford probably would have left the Mustang unchanged to age gracelessly.

http://www.autospectator.com/cars/files/images/Denki_Cube_Concept_1__mid.jpg

Hit: 2010 Nissan Cube

A cartoon character come to life, the Cube brings a quirky charm to Nissan's model line. The Cube is rounder and larger than the original model, which was not sold in the United States. The interior offers more space than most college dorm rooms, but Nissan expects the Cube to top 30 m.p.g. on the highway. At 156.7 inches long, the Cube is nearly 10 inches shorter than the Scion xB.

http://www.autospies.com/images/users/omarrana/nissan_350z_front_news_image_red.jpg

Hit: 2009 Nissan 370Z

Elegant new curves and softer, more appealing, interior materials should make Nissan's iconic sports car a $30,000 alternative to the pricey Porsche Cayman and Boxster. The new Z rides on a shorter wheelbase and shrinks 2.7 inches in overall length. Power grows to 332-horsepower, thanks to a 3.7-liter V6 engine mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.

http://www.discovervancouver.com/images_ee/articles_images/mazda3-j68c.jpg

Hit: 2010 Mazda 3

The first production car based on the architecture that will underpin the 2011 Ford Focus, the all-new 3 compact picks up flared fenders and other design cues from Mazda's midsize 6 sedan. For those who prefer the 3 hatchback, the new version of that exciting little car debuts at the Bologna auto show in Italy in December.

http://www.autoincar.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/mini-clubman-jcw-2008.jpg

Hit: Mini E

Too bad about the backseat, which Mini sacrifices to make room for a lithium-ion battery pack, but the little electric car's style and performance are certain to generate long waiting lines when a very limited number go on sale in California, New York and New Jersey. Mini promises a cruising range of 159 miles, charging time around 2 1/2 hours and 95 m.p.h. top speed.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2c/Toyota_Vanguard_.JPG/800px-Toyota_Vanguard_.JPG

Miss: 2010 Lexus RX

The RX SUV is Lexus' best-selling vehicle in the United States. That breeds a natural reluctance to mess with success, but the 2010 model's styling is so evolutionary that it looks more like a facelift than a new car. The RX's Toyota-brand sibling, the Venza, shows what Toyota designers can do when they're turned loose. The RX will remain a stalwart of Lexus' line, but the brand missed an opportunity to make a statement with the new model.

http://germancarscene.com/wp-content/uploads/mercedes-benz-glk-18-4-08.jpg

Miss: Mercedes-Benz GLK concepts

Several concept cars based on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV were long on gimmicks but short on charm. The GLK's shape does not provide designers with an especially promising canvas, but the blingus maximus convertible Urban Whip should have been left at the SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas where it debuted recently. The same goes for the Rally Racer concept, which labored under the weight of a tacked-on rear wing not even a Mitsubishi tuner could love.

Some things that happen in Vegas really should stay there.

Maruti's A-Star to meet European Emission Norms

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2283/1542143672_d4b5fa40b9.jpg

http://www.rupya.com/img/maruti_sx4.jpg
Maruti Suzuki's compact A-Star, which will be launched in October, is expected to surpass the earlier strict emission norms announced by the company.

Emission from the A-Star not only complies with the Euro 3 (Bharat-3) norms that are operational in 13 Indian cities, including Delhi, but also geared to meet stringent emission norms that will be implemented across Europe in the coming years.

The A-Stars CO2 emission will be even lower than 109 gm/km which we had envisaged earlier. This is much lower than the European emission norms that require cars to emit 120 gm/km in the future said Shinzo Nakanishi, MD, Maruti Suzuki.

India's Euro 3 norms is 5 years behind those currently enforced in Europe, while Euro 4 norms that are enforced outside the 13 Indian cities are 10 years behind European benchmarks. While gaseous and particulate matter comprise Euro 4 gradation in India, Europe's emission reports estimate the CO2 discharge levels only. Lower CO2 levels in cars means the car has superior fuel efficiency, said Anomita Chowdhury, Associate Director, Centre for Science and Environment.

Maruti Suzuki's decision to manufacture the A-Star car in India is part of parent Suzuki's overall strategy to make India the manufacturing hub for the production of small cars like the Alto, Swift, and Maruti 800. We may consider manufacturing the A Star later in China which will cater to the Chinese market only. In that case we may have to export auto components from India to China, said Nakanishi.

The firm hopes to export about one lakh units of the A-Star to Europe. In about 2-3 years from the launch, we may export to S America and the SE Asian region, he said.

As part of its strategy to consolidate its position in the A2 segment, which will witness newer players like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda this year onwards, Maruti Suzuki has indicated it will launch the compact Splash next year.

http://img.motorpasion.com/2008/07/ferrari_california-17.jpg

The first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse's 8-cylinder family which has always been defined by power and performance. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment.

The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. The new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California's 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car's performance while enhancing the driving pleasure, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2). The comfort is further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system. The Ferrari California is also equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been further honed to suit the typical driving conditions expected for this new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks as standard guarantee superbly efficient braking.

In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down.

The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever. The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris International Car Show. However, over the coming weeks, new photographs and further details about it will also be published.
