An estimated 18000 runners are expected to participate in today's 2008 Philadelphia Marathon, which starts at 7am at 22nd & Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the city of Philadelphia, PA. The event is sold out and weather is looking perfect for the race. Current morning temps are expected to be in the low 40's with around 50% humidity. Skies are expected to be mostly cloudy throughout race day. The Philadelphia Marathon is considered a Boston Qualifier, and it's likely a number of qualifiers from Philly will head to the 2008 Boston Marathon.
The race officially begins at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 23rd, 2008. The course is sanctioned by USA Track & Field, and is 26.2 miles. Runners will have the experience of culture and colonial history while running through the great city of Philadelphia. The race goes along Ben Franklin Parkway onto Arch street and through Chinatown. Other major streets include Columbus Blvd., Chestnut Street, 34th Street, MLK Drive, Kelly Drive, and Main Street. The race passes the National Constitution Center, City Hall, the Philadelphia Zoo, Memorial Hall, the Schuylkill River, and other major landmarks. A 2008 Philadelphia Marathon Map can be found here. Check locally for information related to street closures, detours, and changes in parking locations on race day.
Besides the map link provided above, there is a detailed Marathon and Half Marathon Course Map in Adobe pdf format here.
Photos from the 15th Anniversary Philadelphia Marathon will be loaded to Flickr at the end of race day, and throughout the next few days. Check Flickr tags philadelphia marathon and philadelphia marathon 2008 for race related photos. Anyone taking photos at the marathon is asked to tag them using the above tags. Participants will be grateful.
There are Cheer Zones set up along the race course, which are action-packed locations that provide spectators the full experience of the Marathon atmosphere. It's a great place to demonstrate encouragement and support for ones favorite runners. An estimated 27 different Cheer Zones are positioned along the course, including 4th & Arch Streets at Mile 1, 34th & Chestnut Streets at Mile 7.5, MLK Drive & Sweet Briar Drive at Mile 10, Hunting Park Drive & Kelly Drive at Mile 17, Kelly Drive & Fountain Green Drive at Mile 15 & Mile 23, and many others.
